…as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12

You might want to look at your pride, if:

  • You’re getting upset with people.
  • You’re unsatisfied with life.

Our pride is an issue when:

  • I don’t need anyone.

Delilah lulled Samson to sleep in her lap and then called a man, who cut off Samson’s seven locks of hair. Then she began to torment him, for he had lost his strength. Then she shouted, “Samson! The Philistines are coming!” He woke up and thought, “I’ll get loose and go free, as always.” He did not know that the LORD had left him. Jdg 16:19-20

  • I matter most.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4

“Pride will destroy a person; a proud attitude leads to ruin.” Pr. 16:18

Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor. Proverbs 18:12

Don't cherish exaggerated ideas of yourself or importance. But have a sane estimate of your capabilities. Romans 12:3

Questions on humility:

Emotional Question: Do I think I’m better than others?

Practical Question: Am I a giver or a taker?

Spiritual Question – Do I see myself as a sinner?

Humility is seen in how:

  • I speak to others.

They must not speak evil of anyone, and they must avoid quarreling. Instead, they should be gentle and show true humility to everyone. Titus 3:2

  • I serve others.

You younger men, accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, serve each other in humility, for “God sets himself against the proud, but he shows favor to the humble.” So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and in his good time he will honor you.1 Peter 5:5-6

But among you it should be quite different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must become your slave. For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:26-28

  • I see myself.

Live in harmony with each other. Don’t try to act important, but enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! Romans 12:16

There’s not one totally good person on earth, Not one who is truly pure and sinless. Ecc. 7:20

“Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.” 1 Peter 3:8

In your life:

  • Who is most important?
  • Who gets served?

And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

Connection Group Questions:

These questions also work well for personal time with God.

  • Why is humility so important?
  • How would you define humility? Does that definition get lived out in your life?
  • What does it mean to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
  • How does humility benefit others?
  • Why does God oppose the proud? 1 Pet 5:5
  • Are you able to have an honest assessment of yourself? Who are you really (Strengths and weaknesses).
  • How would you like humility to be seen in your life?
